People say you can't take the bard out of the game, but I've seen some DMs in my time and some of them, you just can't imagine them wielding a sword or running through the underbrush without a character sheet in their hand. There's something about the way they see the world through the lens of the game that's both fascinating and a little disconcerting.

I think this is where the whole bardcore phenomenon comes in - a group of folks who have taken the bard as a class and elevated it to a kind of mythic status, with some of them even incorporating elements of their own personalities into their characters. Some of them are so into it they've started calling themselves "bardic" DMs, which is just a fancy way of saying they're trying to recreate the world of Dungeons & Dragons in the real world.

The Rise of Bardcore

Now, I'm not saying all bardic DMs are bad DMs, but I think it's fair to say that some of them have a rather... let's call it a "romantic" view of what it means to be a DM. They see themselves as artists, crafting elaborate stories and characters that transport their players to another world. And in a way, that's not a bad thing - a good DM can do just that. But at the same time, I've seen some of these bardic DMs get so caught up in their own imaginations that they forget about the players, or worse, use their power as DM to impose their own views on the game.

It's a delicate balance, and one that I think some bardic DMs struggle with. They get so caught up in their own creative visions that they forget that the game is supposed to be fun for everyone, not just themselves. And yet, at the same time, I think there's something to be said for the passion and dedication that these DMs bring to the table.

The Perils of Over-Identification

The problem with the bardic DM phenomenon is that it can sometimes lead to over-identification. DMs who see themselves as artists or creators can start to confuse their own personalities with those of their characters, or worse, try to impose those personalities on the players. And that's a recipe for disaster.

I've seen it happen before, where a DM gets so caught up in their own fantasies that they start to see the game as a reflection of their own ego, rather than a collaborative storytelling experience. And that's when things start to go wrong. Players get frustrated, the game starts to break down, and before you know it, everyone's left feeling miserable. It's a shame, really, because I think the bardcore movement has some real potential - but it needs to be tempered with a sense of humility and a willingness to listen to the players.

Bardcore Mayhem Unleashed

I still remember the first time I witnessed Dōn̄lawad The Bardic DM's unbridled enthusiasm for the world of Dungeons & Dragons. It was a night that would change the way I perceived the game – no longer a mere social gathering, but a deeply immersive experience where creativity and chaos reigned supreme. Those who've been lucky enough to sit at Dōn̄lawad's table know exactly what I'm talking about.

Bardcore's Unpredictable Nature

One of the most striking aspects of Dōn̄lawad's game is the way he weaves together disparate elements to create a rich tapestry of storytelling. It's not uncommon for a character's carefully crafted backstory to be upended by a whimsical twist, or for the party to stumble upon a hidden realm that defies the laws of conventional reality. The unpredictability of Bardcore is a major part of its appeal – you never quite know what's going to happen next, and that's what makes it so exhilarating.

Dōn̄lawad's approach to world-building is also noteworthy. Rather than relying on dusty tomes or ancient lore, he often draws inspiration from the collective creativity of his players. This not only fosters a sense of ownership but also ensures that the game remains dynamic and responsive to the needs of the party. It's not uncommon for a player's idea to spark an entirely new plot thread, or for a seemingly trivial detail to become the key to unlocking a long-standing mystery.

The Art of Improvisation

As a seasoned player, I can attest to the importance of being flexible in the face of uncertainty. Dōn̄lawad's game is a masterclass in improvisation, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy are constantly blurred. It's a delicate balance between creating a compelling narrative and allowing the players to shape the story in real-time. When executed correctly, the result is a truly immersive experience that leaves a lasting impression on all involved.

One of the most challenging aspects of playing in Dōn̄lawad's game is learning to think on your feet. As a player, you're constantly presented with new information, unexpected twists, and opportunities for creative problem-solving. It's not uncommon for a session to devolve into a frenetic free-for-all, with players and NPCs alike scrambling to keep up with the rapidly evolving narrative. While it can be intimidating at first, this level of unpredictability ultimately makes the game feel more alive, more vibrant, and more engaging.
