A recently disclosed patent indicates that Sony Interactive Entertainment is actively developing software leveraging machine learning to enhance the believability of non-playable character (NPC) behaviors in video games. Sony, a leading conglomerate in technology and entertainment, has been consistently unveiling various patents, showcasing ongoing projects aimed at advancing gaming experiences.

The Japanese giant, renowned as the parent company of PlayStation gaming consoles, is focusing on multiple aspects of game development. The latest patent introduces a system where machine learning adapts player inputs and perspectives to refine NPC movements and viewpoints. Unlike conventional methods, where NPCs are solely controlled by AI based on recorded human play sessions, this new system incorporates data from both captured sessions and the live playable character.

In essence, the machine learning system enriches NPC behaviors by incorporating real-time movement and perspective data from the player-controlled character. While the realization of patented ideas is not guaranteed, Sony's continuous efforts to enhance gaming realism through patents are evident. Past patents aimed at leveraging player input have emphasized the quest for heightened realism in video games.

The patent outlines a process where machine learning software receives data from the playable character's viewpoint, duplicates the information, generates a copied display, and employs this copy to train the AI governing the NPC.
