My car needs major work and I'm terrified of the cost

My car just hit 100,000 kilometers and the mechanic gave me a long list of recommended services. The total estimate is huge and I have no idea what is truly essential versus what is just "nice to do." I really need some tips to prevent overpaying for repairs because I cannot afford to get this wrong. I started reading up and learned that getting a written estimate upfront is crucial, and that I should ask for a clear explanation of each job. Some guides also suggest asking about the type of parts they plan to use, whether OEM or aftermarket, and even requesting to see the old parts after replacement. I am also thinking of getting a second opinion from another workshop in Mussafah to compare. For those who have been through a major service, what saved you from overpaying? Any specific questions I should definitely ask?
