In anticipation of Sonic Prime's third season on Netflix, Sega Hardlight's Sonic Forces: Speed Battle mobile game is set to introduce Grim Sonic, one of the upcoming season's villains, as a playable character. Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, a mobile spin-off developed by Sega Hardlight, serves as a tie-in to the mainline console game Sonic Forces from 2017. Despite the mixed reception of the original Sonic Forces, Sega Hardlight has continually expanded its mobile counterpart by incorporating characters from various alternate continuities, including IDW Comics, live-action movies, and Sonic Prime.

Following the debut of Sonic Prime characters in Speed Battle after the first season's release, the roster expanded to include characters like Tails Nine, Rusty Rose, Sonic Prime's Boscage Maze version of Sonic with claw abilities, Boscage Maze Amy Rose (Thorn Rose), and the pirate-themed Knuckles the Dread. With the impending third season of Sonic Prime, a new villain named Alpha Grim Sonic, or Grim Sonic, will make an appearance in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. The event introducing Grim Sonic is scheduled to run from January 9 to January 16, a few days ahead of Sonic Prime's season three premiere on January 11.

Grim Sonic's special ability, known as "Grimions," allows players to summon a robotic army that charges forward, obstructing racers in its path. In the Sonic Prime series, Grim Sonic is a creation of Tails Nine, designed to confront Sonic and Shadow. Resembling Chaos Sonic, another robotic duplicate from Sonic Prime, Grim Sonic represents the show's iteration of Sonic's iconic evil counterpart, Metal Sonic. Possessing the same speed-based abilities as Sonic, Grim Sonic emerges as a formidable adversary in Nine's quest to harness the power of the Paradox Prism, as hinted in the trailers for the upcoming season.

In addition to Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Sega Hardlight is actively developing post-launch content for Sonic Dream Team, an Apple Arcade exclusive released in December. As fans eagerly await Sonic Prime's third season, the Sonic franchise is poised to deliver a bountiful year of content in 2024, keeping enthusiasts engaged across various platforms and media.
