A veteran Nintendo programmer is optimistic about the return of Star Fox, a classic series that has been absent from the gaming scene for nearly seven years. The original Star Fox, released for the Super NES in 1993, was revolutionary at the time, featuring polygonal graphics and captivating space-shooter gameplay. It quickly became one of Nintendo's cherished and genre-defining first-party titles. Over the years, several sequels were developed with varying degrees of success, and characters like Fox McCloud and Wolf O'Donnell from Star Fox became fighters in the Super Smash Bros. series.

However, after 2016's Star Fox Zero for the Wii U, the series seemed to fade into the background, with only the release of the long-awaited Star Fox 2 as part of the Super NES Classic Edition bundle. Despite rumors about a new Star Fox game for the Nintendo Switch, these turned out to be nothing more than speculation and fan hopes.

Despite the setbacks and false starts, a notable member of the original Star Fox development team, programmer Dylan Cuthbert, is optimistic about the series taking flight again. In an interview with VGC, Cuthbert shared his perspective, stating, "Oh, I’m sure [it’ll return]. They keep trying, don’t they? They keep trying, not quite achieving the original."

Cuthbert elaborated on how previous Star Fox games couldn't quite capture the magic of the 1993 classic. He mentioned that the original game's success was a blend of UK Amiga-style 3D gameplay, reminiscent of titles like Carrier Command or the Star Wars arcade game, along with Nintendo's signature family-friendly charm. While Cuthbert acknowledged that later sequels had their merits, he believed they lacked a critical component of the successful formula from the first game, a formula he still holds dear to this day.

Dylan Cuthbert isn’t the only one eager to see Star Fox make a long-awaited comeback. Fans continue to pay homage to the series by recreating Fox McCloud’s iconic Arwing in games like Starfield or by developing indie titles inspired by the exhilarating space-shooter franchise. Although there is no official announcement from Nintendo regarding a new Star Fox game at the moment, Cuthbert remains hopeful that players will witness the series' return, either on the Switch or on Nintendo's often-rumored next gaming console.
