Starfield, Bethesda's upcoming open-world sci-fi RPG, might emulate the decade-long lifespan of Skyrim. While Bethesda had the option to continue with established series like Fallout or Elder Scrolls, they've taken a gamble on Starfield, a cosmic exploration game set in an expansive open world. The verdict on whether Starfield will match its anticipation is still out, but company executives are actively fueling the excitement.

During Gamescom, various Bethesda and Microsoft executives have capitalized on the event to discuss Starfield, tantalizing fans with insights into the massive forthcoming game. Among them is Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, who recently likened Starfield to Oblivion, implying that the new RPG bears more resemblance to The Elder Scrolls 4 than to Skyrim.

Despite these distinctions, many still draw parallels between Starfield and Skyrim, suggesting that Starfield effectively adopts Bethesda's established formula within a new sci-fi setting. This comparison resurfaced in a recent IGN interview with Phil Spencer, where he was questioned about the potential for Starfield to sustain player engagement for over a decade, much like Skyrim. Spencer affirmed, "Absolutely." He elaborated, stating, "Our hope is that it is another game that's around a decade plus longer."

Skyrim, since its 2011 debut, has retained enduring popularity, and while Starfield's ability to replicate that triumph remains uncertain, it possesses certain attributes that could contribute to its long-term appeal. For example, Starfield is a day one inclusion on Xbox Game Pass and will perpetually remain accessible via the subscription service. This low entry barrier makes it convenient for a broad spectrum of players with PC or Xbox consoles to join the game.

The allure of Starfield is further bolstered by its planned official DLC. While Bethesda has yet to unveil the full extent of post-launch DLC for Starfield, the Shattered Space expansion has been confirmed. Specifics about this expansion will be unveiled in due course, and it's reasonable to speculate that it will introduce fresh storylines and potentially new locales for exploration, in line with the studio's past DLC offerings.

Not to be overlooked is Starfield's potential modding community. A significant factor contributing to Skyrim's ongoing popularity is the plethora of mods available for the game. Should Starfield attract even a fraction of the modding attention that Skyrim enjoys, it's conceivable that it could maintain a dedicated player base for many years beyond its initial release.
