An intriguing revelation in previews for Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name has astounded fans by showcasing Masaharu Kaito from the developer's Judgment spin-off series, establishing an unexpected connection between the game and the broader Like a Dragon narrative. This Gaiden title serves as a spin-off from the primary series, honing in on Kazuma Kiryu's return after the events of Yakuza 6. It sheds light on Kiryu's experiences during Yakuza: Like a Dragon while interweaving a link to his appearance in the eighth installment, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Remarkably, the game also knits itself to Judgment, another spin-off series crafted by the same studio.

Judgment and its sequel Lost Judgment stand as detective thriller spin-offs, employing the same beat-em-up action gameplay and open-world mechanics found in Like a Dragon. These games meld these elements with investigations and enigmas for the player to unravel in the shoes of private investigator Takayuki Yagami. Within the narrative, Yagami partners with Masaharu Kaito, a former yakuza member of the Tojo Clan, at his detective agency. Although the games revolve around events in Kamurocho, they seldom overtly reference one another, rendering the inclusion of both Kaito and Kiryu in Gaiden a surprising twist.

The latest issue of Famitsu unveiled this revelation, indicating that Kiryu will encounter Kaito, even presenting a screenshot featuring the two characters side by side. As per a translation of the article, Kaito will feature in a substory within the game, accompanied by other returning minor characters such as Etsuko from Yakuza 0. The article also offers a brief background on Kaito, portraying him as a former lieutenant of the Matsugane family, affiliated with the Tojo Clan, and delving into his collaboration with Yagami. The translation notes that this marks the first meeting between Kaito and Kiryu, teasing the potential interactions they might share in Like a Dragon Gaiden.

Devoted fans of both series expressed keen interest in Kaito's role in the game, particularly within a substory and the anticipated interactions. Kaito's character bears similarities to Kiryu, notably reflected in his flamboyant attire reminiscent of Kiryu's outfit from Yakuza 0. This parallel extends to Kaito's gameplay in Judgment and Lost Judgment, where his moveset borrows from Kiryu's Brawler and Beast styles from the same game.

Kaito's rendezvous with his direct muse in the forthcoming Gaiden promises to be a delightful piece of fanservice for Like a Dragon aficionados. With Kaito's inclusion in Gaiden, the doorway is ajar for other characters from the spin-off series to potentially grace future installments, perhaps even paving the way for a cameo by Takayuki Yagami. For now, fans eagerly await to discover how and why Kiryu and Kaito become entangled in Sotenbori.
